After a couple of hours spent at school this morning, we went in search of rash vests ready for our next foray into the sea. Having suffered slightly pink backs from snorkelling (with t-shirts and sun cream, I hasten to add), we decided that rash vests were the way forward. Unfortunately, the dive shop was closed for four hours in the middle of the day which left us with a quandry - what to do? Lunch was the obvious choice, so we ate a rather tasty crepe overlooking the sea revelling in yet another beautiful sight. This still left us with a couple of hours to spare in the heat of the day (a mere 39 today). So, off-road book in hand we set off to take some photographs. Just a few km out of the city, we turned off along the track to the suggested viewing point. The book had suggested a bumpy ride, bumpiness dependent on the amount of rain. Once more, last summer's rain had done it's work. Almost immediately we engaged the gravel (snow or grass too, but we haven't seen much of those recently) setting, followed rather swiftly by the high suspension and oh did we need it! Huge holes had been created and there were parts of the road where we were not entirely sure whether it was wide enough for the car with a rather steep drop as an alternative. We were rewarded with amazing panoramic views.
While we were at one of the viewing platforms, we saw a phone company car toddling off to the highest mobile phone tower in the area. It looked to be an interesting drive, rather more hairy than we had realised when we attempted it! We met the same car on the way down - we pulled in to let him past just before we attempted the worst part. He waited for us to check we were ok. How nice was that!
Looking down the valleys we realised how steep much of the road was. Going up didn't seem so bad, but coming down seemed an all together different proposition. Never mind, we made it back in one piece. We're off to Snake Pass tomorrow for more exciting driving and wadi wading. We finally bought our rash vests, so all should be well.
