A few musings

Well, given that I have been made a footballing widow for the evening, I have plenty of time to update you all on the goings-on in Oman.  Nothing very interesting has happened since my last blog I'm afraid, but I thought I had better not delay like last time!

Since arriving 8 weeks ago, we have seen huge changes here.  We keep remembering that we are living in a newly developing country. This November marks the 40th anniversary of the current Sultan, and apparently he has pretty much 'built' Muscat in those years.  Very little existed before, with one simple road from the airport to the old city.  Now, there are 2 major highways (soon to be 3) and huge amounts of infrastructure. The really odd thing is that road junctions disappear at random so that suddenly you cannot go the way that you were expecing after all and were not warned about it in advance.

We are most excited by the 3rd highway's near completion because it has taken away our one set of roadworks on the journey to work!  We have been able to sample the new road on our way to the golf club.  Unlike in the UK, roads here are not always completely closed until they have finished being built.  A slightly bizarre concept for us, but hey - we're becoming more local by the day!  Possibly the most bizarre thing is that the road signs go up first, so that you can see where you could be going.  It's really rather odd when you see a blue highway sign over a mud track...

We went on a shopping expedition yesterday evening and have discovered even more delicious food.  While looking for pickled onions, we found silverskin onions with chilli and garlic in tomato sauce.  They are great!  However, slightly further ahead in the yum stakes was the feta with chilli and tomato.  The best feta eaten since local feta in Greece!  Wow, we really are in food heaven!

Anyway, I feel that I have rambled on suitably, hope I haven't bored you too much.

I'm off now to take the ironing across the road to the laundry.  It's a hard life...!
